Garage Door Frozen Shut in Montreal?
Four safe ways to thaw a frozen door, what NOT to do, and same-day service if the cold cracked a cable or spring. Montreal's busiest season — we're staffed for it.
Safe thawing — 4 methods that actually work
Ranked by speed and safety:
Hair dryer along the bottom seal (safest)
10–15 minutes, no risk. Direct the warm air at the floor-seal contact line, not the door panel.
Calcium chloride ice melt (de-icer)
Sprinkle along the seal contact line. Works in 20–30 minutes. Avoid rock salt — it corrodes cables.
Warm (not hot) water in a kettle
Pour slowly along the seal. Warm only — hot water cracks cold rubber and can crack concrete.
Heat gun (use with extreme care)
Fast but easy to melt the rubber seal. Keep moving, never linger over one spot.
Free? Open the door, sweep out any ice, dry the seal, and apply silicone lubricant to prevent re-freezing tonight.
Never do these — they cause real damage
❌ Open flame or torch (fire + cracked rubber). ❌ Repeated opener cycling (burns the motor capacitor — $200 fix). ❌ Slamming the door manually (snaps cables). ❌ Boiling water (cracks concrete + freezes worse).
Why Montreal garage doors freeze
It's almost always one of these:
Snowmelt pools at the bottom seal
mediumDaytime sun melts snow off the car, water pools at the seal, refreezes overnight bonding rubber to concrete.
Worn weatherstrip
lowCracked seal lets water in and out. Replacement is $80–$160 and prevents the problem.
Poor garage slope or drainage
mediumCommon in 1970s-built homes. Water doesn't drain away — pools at the door.
Cold-shrunk steel cables
highBelow -20°C, cables can contract enough to bind or snap when you cycle the door.
Lubricant thickening in cold
mediumHardware lube becomes molasses at -15°C. Door feels heavy, opener strains, capacitor burns.

What -20°C nights do to Montreal garage doors
Our service log: cable and spring failures spike 4× during the first sub -20°C cold snap of December and the polar vortex weeks of January. Older NDG, Verdun, and South Shore homes with original 1970s-80s weatherstrip see the most frozen-shut calls. We carry cold-rated parts and silicone-based lube on every truck, year-round.
